So, the lack of updates last weeks has been the first official fail of 2010. Thankfully, I have many readers to remind me of the fact. Actually just one, but hey, in spirit he’s LEGION! So, lack of updates has been primarily about taking a much needed break, catch up to some of the games I didn’t get a chance to play in 2009, and wondering just how things can get worse this year. So, the links.

  • John Romero (yes, Him) talks about Squaresoft’s Secret of Mana and Nasir Gebelli, its main programmer, in particular. For those unaware of him, Nasir gained a certain reputation in the field, starting from the Apple II days. In this piece Romero talks about the game’s convoluted development process, with several curious insights.

In between having nightmares about an apocalypse caused by a three month solo by Yngwie Malmsteen, having survived a typhoon, trying to create a list of the albuns I’ve enjoyed the most in 2009 but realizing they’re either from 2007 or from the last century, Christmas came with a whisper. Nothing much to add, save that it’s probably one of the worst christmas season I can remember. The brief vacation period to follow will be spent on resting, wearing pyjamas for an entire week and trying to write about games I’ve enjoyed the most in 2009. That too is poised to be an epic fail.
With that out of the way:
  • Clive Thompson of Wired wrote an excellent article about the Duke that never came to be. Hardest point to take in seems to be that the game was actually turning out good.

As I hit the 29 years of age mark, little has changed. I still find my email inbox filled with advertisements for increasing my sex drive (when what I really needed was the opposite), I still have little time to play and to talk about games (barring my articles on Smash!), I still can’t spend time with my friends (who seem as distant and busy as me). 5 minute breaks to catalogue curiosities, at least, fares better (then again this is only the second weekend I get around to doing this so you know it’s bound to fail sooner or later).
